It’s hard to believe we’ve already crossed that magical middle of summer timeline. Our local Kenton Park has two evening concerts coming, Tuesday nights: August 17th and August 24th for live music, check the KNA calendar for details. Also Portland Parks and Recreation Summer Playground Program will be weekdays 11 am – 5 pm until August 18th. Free lunches M – F are available for kids from 12 pm – 1 pm. The water feature looks to be busy on all sunny afternoons and there’s room for picnics, playing freebie, and lounging in the sun for everyone.

There are several streets in Kenton that have become part of the new Bicycle Boulevards system with the special “sharrow” symbol. Rather than having to stay in a bike lane, these streets: Wabash, Hamlin and Fenwick Avenues are open to both riders and cars sharing together, still be careful, as old driving habits on these streets are still common – no stopping, turning left into traffic and speeding.

Practical note: burglaries always seem to go up in the summer, too many windows and doors are left unlocked and cat burglars are handy at taking advantage of easy entry.

The KNA is doing some updating to our website in August to speed things up, so watch for those improvements and please excuse any downtime you may experience.

The Kenton Library, 8226 N Denver presents this helpful workshop for neighborhood students and their families on Saturday, June 19th, 2 – 3 pm

At many colleges, the application essay is a critical statement, often having a decisive impact on whether an applicant is admitted or denied. This session reviews the essential elements of a good application essay, using a wide variety of examples from real college applications to illustrate positive and negative features. Parents and teens will gain skills to get started and how to stay on track to successful completion. Tim Cantrick has 30 years of college counseling experience, and is currently an independent counselor serving families in the Portland area.

Registration required; register online, in the library or by calling 503.988.5234. Last minute walk-ins OK if seating permits.

Congratulations to all those who’s time and effort created the tremendously successful Kenton St Fair event!! Watching the smiling faces passing through the fair all day was memorable, the attendance was excellent, the rainy day didn’t stop the crowd, music rang, food aromas mingled in the air, the car show glistened, kids and dogs jumped and played, balloons waved in the wind and it was truly an uplifting event for our neighborhood!!

Don’t miss this exciting neighborhood celebration!!

10 AM unitl 6 PM downtown Historic Kenton Business District

Currently there are over 70 vendors confirmed, three stages fully booked for the day, a coaster car exhibition, a car and bike show, and a variety of games and activities for folks of all ages! With the support of neighbors, businesses and artists, we have secured some incredible performers who have offered to help our new event become something special simply because they care to help. We’re excited to welcome The Lions of Batucada, Sarah Moon & The Night Sky, Mr. Ben and so many more as they entertain us throughout the day and keep the energy up for this special day.

Kids will have plenty to do too. With an entire tent dedicated to children’s activities, a puppet show, the Winterhawks hockey team will be bringing their slapshot game.

And finally, don’t forget to check out the coaster car exhibition at 10am! While it’s small this year, we’re hoping in the future for this event to become a practice run for those cars going to Mt. Tabor… spread the word. And right near the start line you will see a full block of amazing vehicles thanks to Mackins Autobody hosting the first Mackins Car & Bike Show (all proceeds from the car and bike show go to JDRF).

It should be a day of great fun, and we hope to see you there! Tell your friends!
