Making a phone call only takes about three minutes—but your calls have a huge impact on our city officials.
If you’re not sure what to say, here’s a sample call script to help:
“My name is [NAME], and I live in [NEIGHBORHOOD]. I’m calling to express my strong opposition to the city’s proposal to close Columbia Pool. The pool is a mainstay in North Portland and, more importantly, it serves some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city.
The Park Bureau’s five-year equity plan leads with race, and one of the plan’s stated goals is to “provide equitable access to City services to all residents.” Closing a long-standing and important community asset that serves people of all ages and abilities, many of whom are people of color, seems about as far from that goal as the bureau could get.
Knowing that nearly $3 million of the current Parks Replacement Bond was just invested in Dishman and Grant pools – one of which is open just 11 weeks a year and both of which serve communities that are whiter and more affluent than those Columbia Pool serves – makes the equity plan goal of providing equitable access to services seem like lip service at best.
Columbia Pool a vital resource for our community, serving thousands of children, families, seniors, disabled residents and a diverse cross-section of community members all year round.
Additionally, Columbia Pool supports aquatics programs for our city’s most underserved schools, and is a crucial resource for many underserved populations in the city, including older adults, low-income families, people with disabilities, and communities of color.
On a personal note, [INSERT YOUR PERSONAL STORY/CONNECTION TO THE POOL]. I’m asking [NAME OF ELECTED OFFICIAL] to restore operating funds for Columbia Pool to the budget and prevent the closure of this important and historic community resource.”
