Through the North Portland Trust Fund (NPTF) under Portland Parks & Recreation, the Kenton Neighborhood Association has been allotted $12,000 toward the 2020 NPTF Kenton Placemaking Grant Program for community enhancement projects that increase connections people have to each other and the places they care about; engage historically marginalized and/or underrepresented communities; and sustain those already involved and/or strengthen existing programs.
Applications under the Kenton Placemaking Grant will be eligible to apply for awards ranging from $500 up to $5,000. Grant awards will be determined by an evaluation committee, selected by the KNA Board of Directors, of individuals that live and/or work in the Kenton neighborhood.

Grant Workshops
North Portland Neighborhood Services provides free grant writing workshops for the Kenton Placemaking Grant. These workshops provide feedback on project ideas and help answer questions about the grant application and what funds can be used in which areas.
Grant writing workshops provide an opportunity for grant applicants to network with others about projects. You’ll learn about grant writing, the application and selection process, meet committee members, learn about other projects seeking grant funding for possible collaboration, and learn how to get individual help with your grant. Attendance at a grant writing workshop is highly encouraged.

Grant Background
A City Resolution passed in 1996 established the NPTF to capture a portion of revenue gathered by the Portland International Raceway (PIR) at events requiring a noise variance. North Portland Neighborhood Services (NPNS) was selected to administer the community enhancement grant program. The return of IndyCar to PIR in 2018 brought the first major contribution from a noise variance event in over a decade, thus reactivating the trust fund as a grant program in 2019. The NPTF Placemaking Grant returns in 2020 with a total of $36,000 to distribute.
Due to years of active engagement by Kenton neighbors on noise abatement and livability issues (created by PIR variance events), the Kenton neighborhood has its own grant program and grant selection committee within the NPTF Placemaking Grant with $12,000 to allocate. This leaves NPNS with $25,00 to administer a concurrent grant program throughout the remaining North Portland neighborhoods of Arbor Lodge, Bridgeton, Cathedral Park, East Columbia, Hayden Island, Overlook, Piedmont, Portsmouth, St Johns and University Park.
Each project grant applicant is only eligible to apply for funding under a single NPTF Placemaking Grant service area.
The Kenton service area is defined with these boundaries:
- Northern: The channel of the Columbia River that separates this region of Portland from Hayden Island.
- Southern: N Lombard Street
- Eastern: I-5
- Western (traveling from north to south, respectively): Follows N Portland Road, N Columbia Boulevard and N Chautauqua Boulevard.
2019 Grant Awards
-The Historic Kenton Firehouse, a historic building, offers free or reduced rates to 35 community groups and partners and will replace tables purchased over 20 years ago. $500
-The Kenton Farmers Market and community will create a street painting project focusing on food and health at a significant street node, creating space for connection and conversation. $1650
-The Arbor Lodge/Kenton Neighborhood Emergency Team will create neighborhood block-level resiliency through distributed emergency medical supply caches. $1725
-Events, landmarks and neighborhood assets will be highlighted on a new edition of the Kenton Business District map expanding to include Lombard Street businesses. $1200
-The Kenton Rose Garden, a local Kenton landmark, will benefit from a new sign and bench. $4925
